Lorraine R. Thurman, age 100, died Thursday January 25, 2007 at Firesteel Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a rosary at 6:00 PM followed by a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Lorraine Rose Thurman was born on January 5, 1907, at Bridgewater, SD, to Thomas and Mary (Finnegan) Tormey. She moved as a child with her family to Letcher, SD. She attended school in Woonsocket, SD and then graduated Notre Dame High School and attended Notre Dame Academy.

She married Jack Conrad Thurman on January 7, 1925, in Sioux Falls at St. Joseph Cathedral where they renewed their vows in 1995. She and her husband raised fifteen children. They farmed until his death in 1997.

Lorraine was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Navy Mothers. She enjoyed helping others, especially the elderly or children who were ill. She sewed many beautiful prom dresses and in 1955 was awarded the WNAX Good Neighbor of the Year in SD. Her greatest pleasures were her children, grand children and great grandchildren, her husband and helping others in need.

She is survived by her children: John R Thurman and wife Carol, Boulder, CO; Donald P. Thurman and wife Jean, Longmont, CO; Denis F. Thurman and wife Rene, N. Carolina; Maureen Frances Brown and husband Paul, Petaluma, CA; Richard Thurman and wife Linda, Sioux Falls, SD; Patrick M. Thurman and wife Becky, Sioux Falls, SD; Jeanne Pool, Lincoln, NE; Kathy Olson and husband Wayne Billings, MT; Margaret Peggy Bergelt and husband Ed, Omaha, NE; James D. Thurman and wife Jill, Bellingham, WA; Michael C. Thurman and wife Bonnie, Sioux Falls, SD; and Kevin Thurman and wife Louise, Mitchell, SD; fifty grandchildren, several step grandchildren, seventy plus great grandchildren and many great great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Margaret Tormey. Fullerton, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack; son, Thomas on May 17, 1953; daughters, Beverly and Barbetta and her parents, Thomas and Mary Tormey, four brothers and two sisters.
